Obituary of Lois Cummings

It is with great sadness that we announce passing of Lois Ann Cummings, age 57, which occurred on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John, NB, on November 28, 1960, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Mary (Tays) Hardy. Lois was born in Bloomfield Ridge, New Brunswick, the eldest of seven daughters. Following the untimely passing of her mother, Lois and her sisters were welcomed by different families in the community during their time of need. Lois always kept in touch with her sisters, even when they were apart. During this time, Lois welcomed her pride and joy, her first daughter, Jodi Leigh Hardy. Among their many adventures, Lois and Jodi lived in Edmonton, Alberta for a year. Eventually, however, they returned to the Hampton area. Once Lois and Jodi moved back home to New Brunswick, Lois worked as a nanny and housekeeper in various homes. She treated the kids she nannied like her own, and remained in contact with many of them up until her passing. Some years later, Lois met and began dating Jack Cummings. Lois and Jodi moved to Norton to live with Jack. Lois and Jack were married and three years later, Lois became pregnant with twin girls, Katelin and Jenna. After the twins were born, Lois embraced Norton life, becoming friends with many of her neighbours and beginning to work in local care homes and with the elderly. She eventually received her Geriatric Assistant certificate and got a job at the Dr. V.A. Snow Centre. Lois brightened the day of everyone she took care of, and she excelled in caretaking up until her diagnosis many years later. Almost everyone who saw her at work remarked on her excellent work ethic. Lois always tried to maintain close relationships with her children, grandchildren, and close friends, despite hard times and living in different communities. Her greatest joys, aside from spending time with her patients, were long weekends with her grandkids in Norton and her annual Christmas celebration with family. Lois worked hard throughout the year to make sure that holidays and family celebrations were over the top and fun for the grandkids. She loved surprising her loved ones. Along with caring for people at work, Lois also cared for many family members and friends in their time of need. Lois became ill in December 2017, all while still working two jobs. She was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on January 21, 2018 and fought with all of her strength to overcome the illness. A benefit was held for Lois in May, and she watched from her hospital room to see her former community rally around her with love, music and support. With the help of her many "angel" nurses on 5A South at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Lois fought a good fight. Special friends, family, and activities during her last good week were topped off by a picnic planned by and for her grandchildren to celebrate her life. Even in her last moments, she was surrounded by friends and family, and even requested some good music to be played. Throughout her fight, Lois expressed positivity, working with her doctors on treatment plans. Even when treatments didn’t go according to plan and she became more ill, she still remained courageous and demonstrated great faith. Lois lived her last days with peace, joy, courage, and grace. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. Lois is survived by her loving daughters, Jodi Hourihan and her husband Kirk of Norton, NB; Jenna Mullin and her husband Jake of Sussex, NB; and Katelin Cummings and her boyfriend Paul Otten of Fredericton, NB; cherished grandchildren: Emily, Austin, Courtny, Brock, Luke and baby Clark, who is expected to arrive in September; sisters: Linda Savoie and her husband Eloi of Saint John, NB; Brenda Gionet of Sussex, NB; Nancy Hardy of Sussex, NB; Kathleen Steeves and her husband Calvin of Moncton, NB; Susan McDermot and her husband Kent of Saint John, NB; and Carol Shroder and her husband Kris of Edmonton, AB; as well as several very special nieces and nephews. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (506-839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, where visitation will be held on Thursday, June 28, 2018 from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8PM. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, June 29 at 11:00am from Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church with Father Dan Bastarache presiding. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Donations in memory of Lois may be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Canadian Cancer Society or to the memorial of the donor’s choice.
