It is with heavy hearts that the family of Norman Archibald Jost of Cambridge Narrows, New Brunswick, announces his death June 24, 2020 at the age of 88. Fondly known to his wife and friends as Norm and as "Guy" to his sons, he passed peacefully at Mill Cove Nursing Home in Mill Cove, NB. Norm was born March 16, 1932, in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, to Archibald and Hazel (Gray) Jost. As the youngest of 5 children, he was a bit of an afterthought, particularly during the war years, and his early years were spent exploring the woods and paddling the waters of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. As a teenager, he worked in lumber camps in N.B. and the Peribonka, Quebec, and on a tramp freighter around South America. He returned to study engineering at Mount Allison University where he met and married the love of his life, Mary Audrey Elizabeth (Beth) Hayes. After college, he worked as a draughtsman and technologist for a variety of engineering firms in New Brunswick and Niagara Falls, Ontario. After a sabbatical as a pewter smith in Fredericton, he joined N.B. Power to work on electrical design for the Point Lepreau nuclear power plant and other projects. In 1987 he and Beth retired to their homestead in Cambridge Narrows, N.B., where he filled his days building their family home, tending to his garden and trees, and fixing anything and everything. It was a rare visit to friends or family where Norm was not invited to help with something or other needing repair. A man of many interests and talents, Norm explored his artistic gifts in his early years, working in pencil, oils, and especially watercolors. His family treasures many of his works to this day. He made his own beer and wine, using the fruit grown in his yard as the foundation for his next creation. He was an avid beekeeper, harvesting honey to give as gifts and thank yous, and never sold a jar in his life. He was knowledgeable on a variety of topics from wind and tidal power to the trees and birds. He had a soft spot for his grandkids, and he loved to make them laugh, teach them about his bees, and impress them with his tinkering skills. He also made sure to pass on his love of olives and coffee to the next generation. He doted on his cats and dogs, and they were devoted to him in return. He was famously able to befriend any cat, feral or domestic, and dogs quickly learned to sit at his feet beneath the kitchen table to share his crackers. More gregarious than he would admit, Norm was able to talk to anybody and loved to tell stories and make people laugh. Despite his advancing Alzheimer’s, he maintained his cheeky sense of humor through his final days. Norm and Beth’s love story was an example to all who knew them. They shared a deep devotion that was balanced by squabbles and jests. Where one lagged, the other thrived, and they cherished this partnership for 65 years until Beth’s passing in 2018. Norm is survived by his eldest sister Eleanor Daly, eldest son Frank and daughter-in-law Beth, grandchildren Zoe and husband Ronny, Tasha and husband Abdull, Emma and fiancé Malcolm, Ellen and partner Ryan, and his only grandson Ewan, as well as by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his youngest son Ronald, and siblings Roland Jost, Joanna Downey, and "Loy" McCann. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (506-839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB. A private interment will be held at Big Rock Cemetery in Bloomfield at a later date. Donations in Norm’s memory may be made to Alzheimer Society of Canada or Mill Cove Nursing Home.
