Obituary of Madilene Sherwood
The death of Grace Madilene (Lunn) Sherwood, age 92, wife of the late Senator Cyril B. Sherwood, occurred on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at Great Oaks Special Care Home, McDonald’s Point, NB. Maddie was born on November 24, 1917, the daughter of the late Captain William and Arlana (Foster) Lunn. Madilene Lunn was born in Springfield, Kings County, NB, and lived there with her family before moving to Norton, when her deep-sea Captain Father retired from the sea. As a child she liked to accompany her father and mother on the mail route, with horse and covered wagon and later a Model A Ford her father used in the summer. Mail was delivered every day except Sunday (even on Christmas and New Year’s when those days fell on a week day). Maddie attended school in Norton and later graduated from Sussex High School. She went to Saint John to study hairdressing and then returned to Norton to operate her own Beauty Parlour. In 1939 she married Cyril B. Sherwood and moved to Midland at Valley View Farm. Together they operated a fox ranch, a dairy farm and a funeral business. Maddie was the first teacher and friend of several immigrant families who arrived on her doorstep in the 40’s and 50’s without knowing a word of English when they came to Canada to begin a new life following the war. Her patience and understanding helped many of the women learn our language and customs. She introduced many of them to the Women’s Institute which they later joined. In 1952 her husband was elected as an MLA for New Brunswick and appointed Minister of Agriculture for eight years. Maddie traveled often with him and because of her love for people, she had many happy memories of those years. Her love for home and family has always made her a very special person to her family and a friend to many through the years. Maddie was brought up in the Anglican Church by her parents. After her marriage, she, along with Cy and their children attended the Midland Baptist Church. She always loved her Anglican heritage and continued to faithfully support and often attend services with her sister, Ruth Parks and her family in Apohaqui. After Cy’s death in 1996, Maddie often expressed her desire to go through adult Baptism to outwardly express her faith in Christ. In July, 1997, Maddie, along with her granddaughter Janet Warzecha and others were baptized by Pastor’s Larry Matthews and Garth Williams in the Belleisle Bay right along the shores of the "Camp" which she loved so much. Maddie is survived by sons Bill and Ruth Sherwood of Midland, and Bob and Heather Sherwood of Kiersteadville; daughters Ann Sherwood of Lower Millstream, Mary and Dan Warzecha and Barbara Sherwood of Kiersteadville; grandsons Michael and Ginny Sherwood, Jim and Shannon Sherwood, Bruce and Tanya Sherwood; granddaughter Janet Warzecha; great grandchildren Jillian, Ryan, Megan, Jackson, Logan, Jordan, Bailey, Maya and Abby; sister-in-law Muriel Lane of Toronto; several nephews and nieces, and cousins. She was predeceased by her sisters Evelyn Lunn and Ruth Parks and brother Roy Lunn. She is resting at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (839-2156) 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, with visiting on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. A celebration service will be held at 2:30 p.m., from Midland Baptist Church, on Sunday, October 10, 2010. Interment will follow in Midland Cemetery. Donations to the Gideons or the memorial of the donor’s choice would be appreciated.
