Obituary of Gloria Arris
The unexpected death of Gloria Lily Arris, age 82, wife of Frank Arris of Apohaqui, formerly the proprietors of the Eveleigh Hotel, Evandale, NB, occurred at her residence on Friday, February 25, 2011. She was born on July 30, 1928, in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, UK, the daughter of the late John and Agnes (McArthur) Carse
Gloria endured many hardships growing up during World War II in the coastal city of South Shields, England, including losing her mother as a young woman. After meeting and marrying Frank, her husband of the next sixty years, Frank, Gloria and their eldest son immigrated to Canada in 1957. After relocating to Canada, she proceeded to live her life devoted to raising her growing family while working with computers in the chemical industry.
Gloria had the opportunity to live in many communities across Canada including Montreal, Edmonton, Toronto, Fredericton, Evandale, Calgary and Apohaqui calling New Brunswick home for the last 36 years. Gloria and Frank’s long time involvement in the scouting movement led her to become one of the first female Akela Cub Scout leaders while in Edmonton.
In 1975 The Arris’s became proprietors of the Eveleigh Hotel in Evandale which they operated until 1992 where she became well known for her witty charm. She really enjoyed meeting people, entertaining, spontaneous sing songs and enjoyed a lifelong passion for baking.
Gloria was an active involved mother, always supporting her children in their various interests and endeavors over the years. She also enjoyed a challenging crossword, TV game shows, playing the piano and was a very talented needlework artist creating many beautiful tapestries, sweaters, afghans, rugs, doilies and tablecloths over the years and annually made sure her younger brother got his homemade woolen socks. She was an avid reader of mystery novels, Agatha Christie being her favorite author. She will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched.
Gloria is survived by her husband Frank; sons John Arris of Apohaqui, Keith Arris of Calgary, AB; daughters Lynn Arris and Sylvia Grant, both of Calgary, AB and Nancy and Brian Clark of Evandale; grandchildren Michael, Gloria Lynn, Amber, Ryan, Richard; great grandchildren Erich, Isaac, Levi, Dyson; brother John and Rene Carse of England; several nieces and nephews.
