For others it is their laugh or the way they hold their head, but the thing that comes to mind first when I think of you dear Grammy is your hands. Over the past 90 years your two hands have been so many things to so many people. From the chubby little fingers that tugged at your Mommy's apron to the growing hands of sister to play with when the chores were done. From the confident hand that picked up the pencil and books and learned the lessons so that you could hold the chalk and pass that knowledge on to others. From the shy hand that held that of another as you walked down the aisle to the nervous ones that held a new born son on a warm summers day so long ago. Your hands have done labour that would ruin most women today and their strength makes me proud. Your hands have folded together at the end of busy days and, holding a wearied head, have felt the whispered prayers slip past them up to God and that faith makes me feel humbled. Your hands have kneaded and slapped :) endless amounts of dough into wonderful homemade creations to nourish those around you and those efforts make me feel lucky. Your hands have moved thru the water effortlessly as the sun danced over the ripples and the children laughed and played beside you and those memories make me feel joyous. Your hands have held tightly to books while your warm arms wrapped themselves around little people perched on your knee on the rocking chair on the porch and those stories make my imagination come alive. Your hands have held needle and thread and painstakingly created all kinds of wonderful colourful patterns and those creations have kept me warm and comfy on cold dark nights. Your hands have held your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and have patted them all gently on the head and that gesture makes me feel loved. Your hands have touched countless lives over the past 90 years and all of us who have felt their softness know that they were made special and sent to us as the perfect vessels to share the love in a heart of gold and that touch makes me feel honoured.
