Obituary of Jerome Cogger
The death of Jerome Eugene Cogger, age 87, of Norton, NB, occurred at the Dr. V.A. Snow Centre, Hampton, NB, on May 1, 2011. He was born on August 26, 1923, in Norton, NB, the son of the late Patrick and Alice (Mahoney) Cogger
Jerome had polio at the age of 10. He never liked going to school because they teased him about being lame.
He worked on the farm all his life until his brother Joe was killed on the farm. After it was sold , he retired. Then he looked after Mom until she died in 1991. He was very devoted to Mom and the Catholic Church. He attended Mass every Sunday and prayed every night for one hour.
The farm where he worked still has the driveway called "Cogger Lane". He looked after himself for 12 years with the help of neighbors bringing his mail and Hal Cripps bringing his groceries. His sisters and brothers helped him out on Sundays when they cooked him a casserole.
In later years, when Mother would say to Jerome "I’m getting old and stupid." , Jerome would say "you may be getting older but you’re not stupid!".
In 2004 he was unable to walk so he went to the hospital, then to St. Joseph’s Hospital and then to The Dr. Snow Centre for 6 years, where he received excellent care at the nursing home.
When we visited Jerome in the nursing home he always asked about the farm. His love for the farm never faded.
He will be sadly missed by his family.
Jerome is survived by his sisters Mary Gallagher, Rothesay, Kaye White, Sussex, Loretta Goguen, Summerside, PE, Pat and Paul Byrne, Moose Horn Creek, and Margaret Casey, Saint John; brother Frank and Olive Cogger, Saint John; several nephews, nieces and cousins.
