Shirley Cooper, resident of Windsor Court Retirement Residence, Fredericton, NB, formerly of Cambridge-Narrows, NB, passed away on Friday, May 6, 2011, at the age of 79. She was the wife of the late James Roy Cooper. Shirley was born at Saint John, on October 25, 1931, the daughter of the late Chauncey Kirkwood Atkins and Charlotte Emma Craft. She leaves to mourn her brother Walter Kirk Atkins of Cambridge-Narrows; nephew Michael Atkins and niece Shawna Atkins-Bullett both of Montreal; several cousins and hundreds of friends. She enjoyed her country home with its beautifully tended gardens, entertaining friends with her music, laughter, blueberry pie and a hot cup of tea. She served on many committees related to her church affiliations, political concerns of her community and was the International President of The Kings Daughters and Sons from 1978-82. She was nominated to the Order of New Brunswick and holds the "Keys to the City" of several American cities. One of her many accomplishments was the creation of The Gloria Dei Singers, an ecumenical choir, which sang under her direction throughout the Maritimes for many years. Shirley was a very jovial lady whose door was already open to friends and strangers alike. They left her presence with feelings of warmth after having shared a time of good fun and fellowship. At the end of every grace was the prayer that we should always be aware of the needs of others. Besides her garden, Shirley loved a good mystery, knitting, quilting and playing auction 45’s. She was active for many years as a voice and piano teacher. She loved young people and generously, and anonymously supported many with scholarships and bursaries. She donated generously to thirty-one charitable organizations, her two favorites being the S.P.C.A. and MADD. She has been, and will continue to be, a great benefactor to U.N.B. Resting at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre, (506-839-2156) 18 Scovil Road, Norton, with visiting on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Personal condolences to the family may be made through www.sherwoodsfuneralhome.com Because of limited seating at her home church, St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church of Hampton, and because of the anticipated mourners expected, the funeral service will be held from Norton Wesleyan Church, 676 Route 124. at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10, 2011. Interment will be later in Fern Hill Cemetery. Officiating at the Funeral will be the Rt. Rev. Bishop George Lemmon. A time of fellowship and refreshments will be held immediately following the service.
