Obituary of Mary Monahan
Mary Baird (McCamon) Monahan, age 79, of Southfield, NB, wife of the late Ronald Monahan, passed away peacefully with her family at her side, on Monday, March 17, 2014, at the Sussex Health Centre, Sussex, NB. She was born on May 26, 1934, in Scotland, the daughter of the late John and Margaret (McInally) McCamon.
Mary began her life in Kilmarnock, Scotland, when she was born into a very loving and close-knit family. Like many who grew up in Europe during the Second World War, Mary spoke of experiencing air-raid sirens. She also spoke of listening to a young Princess Elizabeth give her wartime radio announcements addressing the youth of the Commonwealth and asking them to be brave and courageous during that difficult time. With Mary’s father fighting in the war, this provided her with some comfort and reassurance.
After finishing her education, Mary worked a few jobs before immigrating to Canada with friends. One of those jobs was as a bus-conductress. She would collect the fares from passengers after they were seated on the bus. Not long after moving to Canada, Mary met and married Ron. It was no secret that Ron was very fond of Mary’s red hair. Together they would raise 11 children and played a big role in raising two of their grandchildren. Mary was a very devoted wife, mother and nana. She always ensured everyone had what they needed. Even at the end, Mary was delighted to provide the christening gown for her great-granddaughter, Felicity, to wear at her baptism.
Mary was an avid reader of romance novels, enjoyed crossword puzzles, read her bible regularly and loved watching murder mysteries on TV.
Mary was the glue that held her family together and she will be deeply missed by all.
