Obituary of Murray Monahan
The death of Murray Joseph Monahan, husband of the late Helen Monahan, of Norton, NB, occurred on Friday, July 11, 2014 at the Sussex Health Centre, at age 92. He was the son of the late Gus and Helen (Rodgers) Monahan.
Murray is survived by his sons James and Heather Monahan of Cambridge-Narrows, NB and Donnie and Rhonda Monahan of Calgary, AB; grandchildren Andrew, Jennifer (Colin), Sarah (Lauris), Shannon, Devon, Jason; great grandchildren Marli, Rylan, Saige, Cale, Quinn; several nieces, nephews and cousin. He was predeceased by brothers Frank and Cyril.
In November 1942 Murray enlisted in the Canadian Army where he served in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during the Second World War. When the war ended he discharged March 1946 and returned home. Soon after he headed out to BC to work. While there he met Helen Robinson and in August 1952 they were married. Due to Helen’s health, they were planning on moving to Arizona, but a doctor advised them to move east.
They settled in Norton in 1954 bring with them their first son James. Don, their second son was born seven years later. Murray was known as a family man where he always put his friends and family first.
Among his many accomplishments was his presidency of the Norton Legion, where he was also a founder and life time member. Not only a veteran, Murray worked with the railway out west and as a mechanic, Dexter’s construction and with the DOT as a grader operator and they also operated a corner store in Norton.
But those who knew Murray later in life knew his six grand children and his five great-grandchilden were his pride and joy. Soon as they were born he became known to all as Gramps.
His friends will always remember his firm handshake, his smart remarks and his stories about his childhood antics with his two brothers Frank and Cyril. His love of travel and dining out with family always ended with a piece of lemon pie. He always was a man to share anything, including half his meals with Jim and Heather’s dogs.
While it will be hard to imagine life without Gramps, we will all carry with us fond and wonderful memories of our times with him.
Murray’s family will receive visitors at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribute Centre (506-839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, on Monday, July 14, 2014 from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 PM, with a Legion Tribute starting at 6:00 PM.
